So I'm having fun setting up my 36-team revamp of MLB, but it's been a lot of work (who knew that adding 6 new teams, moving three others, and the progressive flow downwards with 34 new minor league teams and a host of franchise shifts would take so long?)
I'm running into a problem, though: I can't come up with nickname I like for three of my MLB teams.
I tend to prefer keeping historical minor league nicknames if at all possible. So, for example, I'm definitely going with the Portland Beavers and the San Antonio Missions. But...here's the rub. Charlotte is traditionally been the Hornets. Indianapolis is traditionally the Indians. And Orlando...well, I don't know what the hell to do with Orlando because from what I can tell, they just tend to use the name of their parent club.
I thought I was onto something with Charlotte, given the nickname is the Queen City...Charlotte Royals...awesome...that lasted for about 2.87 seconds until I remembered Kansas City
If this was the Mexican League, I would totally call Orlando the Naranjeros and be done with it...but "Orlando Orange Farmers" just doesn't seem very MLB, does it?
For MLB, I prefer my nicknames to be fairly mainstream. No really wacky ones - "Devil Rays" is bordering on gimmicky IMHO - and I shy away from singular nicknames. I prefer my teams to have nicknames that end in "s".
Also, the Charlotte team will be "Charlotte", not "Carolina". This is because there will be a future MLB team in Raleigh as well. They already have a name - the Raleigh Capitals.
Now that I've gotten all that off my chest, I'd love to hear you suggestions for Charlotte, Orlando and Indianapolis MLB teams. Thanks a bunch!
