PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES VS NEW YORK HIGHLANDERS
The Highlanders had 1-2 losses in 1912 yet had the 6th seed in The Gauntlet. The series favored the Phillies on paper and Philadelphia lived up to the expectation in Game 1. Pete Alexander missed a shutout by 1 inning as he held the Highlanders to 5 hits in Philadelphia's 6-1 win. New York committed 4 errors in the game. Sherry Magee went 3-for-5. The Highlanders did much better in Game 2 as they actually won 4-3 when Happy Finneran walked Jeff Sweeney with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th. Sweeney went 4-for-4. George McConnell allowed just 5 hits as he got the win. Eppa Rixey allowed just 2 earned runs in 7.2 innings but got a no decision. The series shifted to Philadelphia tied 1-1. New York took a 2-1 lead after 1 but the Phillies scored 5 in the bottom of the 2nd to go up 6-2. New York cut it to 6-3 but the Phillies added 6 more in the bottom of the 6th to go up 12-3 and they went on to decimate the Highlanders 13-4. Philadelphia had 15 hits in the game while New York committed 4 errors. Pete Alexander allowed just 1 earned run to get the win. Mickey Doolan went 3-for-4, Dode Paskert had 3 RBI and Hans Lobert scored 3 times. 8 different Phillies got a hit, 7 different Phillies got an RBI and 7 different Phillies scored a run. The Phillies jumped out to an early lead in Game 4, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd to take a 3-0 lead. Earl Moore took care of business from there as the Highlanders did not score until the 9th inning. The Phillies tallied up 11 hits on their way to a 4-2 win. John Titus went 3-for-5 as 7 different Phillies got a hit. Ray Caldwell made sure the Highlanders got to return to New York for Game 6 as he led the Highlanders to a 3-1 win in Game 5. Caldwell did not allow an earned run in the game. 8 different Highlanders got a hit. Earl Moore allowed 2 earned runs in 7.1 innings to get the loss. Game 6 was an error-filled mess by both teams. The Phillies made 3 errors but the Highlanders doubled that, committing 6. The Phillies took advantage, scoring 4 in the top of the 6th to overcome a 2-0 deficit and went on to win 6-4 to end the series. Philadelphia out-hit New York 12-10. Pete Alexander got the win to clinch the Series MVP award. Mickey Doolan went 3-for-5 as 7 different Phillies recorded at least 1 hit. New York also had 7 different batters get at least 1 hit.
