PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS VS PITTSBURGH PIRATES
We are down to three 1911 teams remaining which means the winner of this series will face the New York Giants to see who will claim the 1911 Gauntlet Championship and go on to face the 1909 Cleveland Naps. The series began in Pittsburgh with the Athletics coming out on top in Game 1 9-3. Philadelphia went up 3-1 and then scored 3 more in the top of the 5th to make it 6-1. It was 6-3 when Stuffy McInnis hit a solo home run in the top of the 7th to make it 7-3. The Athletics had 12 hits in the game while the Pirates committed 3 errors. Jack Coombs allowed just 1 earned run to get the win. McInnis and Home Run Baker each went 3-for-5. Max Carey went 3-for-4 for Pittsburgh. Game 2 was a sloppy, error-filled affair. The Pirates committed 7 errors while the Athletics had 4. In the end, though, Philadelphia crushed Pittsburgh 12-3 to go up 2-0 in the series. The Athletics began in the top of the 2nd with 3 runs, including a 2-run homer by Bris Lord to build a 5-1 lead. Then, in the top of the 5th, with the score 5-3, Philadelphia added 5 more runs to make it 10-3 and put the game out of reach. The Athletics piled up 17 hits in the game. Eddie Plank allowed just 2 earned runs in 8 innings to get the win. Lord finished the game 3-for-6 with 3 RBI and scored 4 times. Stuffy McInnis went 4-for-6 and scored 4 times. Eddie Collins Sr went 4-for-6 with 3 RBI. This put the Pirates in a serious dilemma as the series moved to Philadelphia. In 8 home games in this Gantlet, the Athletics were 7-1. And they had outscored the Pirates 22-6 in the two games played in Pittsburgh. And sure enough, the Athletics got 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd to take a 3-2 lead. But, the Pirates were able to regain the lead and were up 4-3 when Philadelphia scored 4 in the bottom of the 6th to go up 7-4. And that was the final score as the Athletics went up 3-0 in the series. Pittsburgh actually out-hit Philadelphia 11-10. Jack Coombs not only got the win, he drove in 3 runs himself. Rube Oldring went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored twice. For the Pirates, Honus Wagner went 3-for-4 and Chief Wilson was 3-for-5. In Game 4, the Athletics led throughout, using a 3-run 2nd to build a 4-0 lead. Pittsburgh's lone broght spot happened in the top of the 9th when Chief Wilson hit a 2-run blast. But it was not near enough as Philadelphia completed the sweep with a 6-3 win. The Athletics got 10 hits and the Pirates made 4 errors. Eddie Plank allowed just 2 earned runs to get the win. Lefty Leifeld allowed just 2 earned runs in 7 innings but got the loss. Ira Thomas went 3-for-4. Stuffy McInnis was named Series MVP.
