BOSTON RED SOX VS PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS
At the #5 seed we have the 1911 World Series Champions. Jack Coombs shut out the Red Sox on 2 hits as the Athletics took Game 1 3-0. The Athletics won a wild Game 2 with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 9th 10-9. Trailing 5-3, Philadelphia scored 6 in the bottom of the 8th only to see Boston tie it with 4 in the top of the 9th. The Athletics had 12 hits but also committed 5 errors. Eddie Plank allowed just 2 earned runs through 8 innings but got a no decision. 13 different players crossed the plate between the two teams. Boston edged Philadelphia 5-4 in Game 3. The Athletics scored 3 in the top of the 2nd to take a 3-0 lead but could not hold it. The Red Sox won despite getting just 4 hits. Each team committed 3 errors. Smoky Joe Wood got the win. Jack Coombs allowed just 1 earned run but got the loss. Philadelphia topped Boston 4-2 in Game 4 to take a 3-1 lead in the series. The Athletics had 12 hits in the game. Eddie Plank pitched 8 innings to get the win. Ray Collins allowed just 2 earned runs but got the loss. Eddie Collins went 3-for-3, Bris Lord went 3-for-5 and Ira Thomas had a solo home run in the top of the 5th. Duffy Lewis hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 7th for the Red Sox. Chief Bender then ended the series by shutting out the Red Sox in Game 5 as the Athletics won 4-0 despite only getting 5 hits. Eddie Cicotte got the loss. Bender was named Series MVP.
