NEW YORK HIGHLANDERS VS DETROIT TIGERS
The Highlanders may have struggled in Chicago but no such problems occurred on the road for New York in Game 1 of this series as the=Highlanders thumped Detroit 14-4. New York trailed 2-0 before scoring 3 in the top of the 3rd and 3 more in the top of the 4th to take a 6-2 lead. Then, with the score 7-4, the Highlaners ran up the score with 7 runs in the top of the 9th. New York out-hit the Tigers 17-11 and Detroit committed 4 errors in the game. Harry Wolter went 3-for-5 with 5 RBI. Otis Johnson also went 3-for-5 and Russ Ford had 3 RBI. The Highlanders put a whuppin' on Detroit 16-6 in Game 2. Clinging to an early 2-1 lead, New York scored 3 in the top of the 3rd and then 8 in the top of the 5th to break out to a 13-1 lead. The Tigers got 4 in the bottom of the 6th to cut it to 13-5 but the Highlanders got 3 more in the top of the 8th to close out the scoring in the game. New York had 17 hits while each team committed 4 errors. Ray Caldwell allowed only 2 earned runs as he got the win. Birdie Cree went 4-for-5 and scored 3 times, Roy Hartzell went 3-for-6 with 5 RBI, Hal Chase also went 3-for-6 and Ray Caldwell went 3-for-4. Detroit's Sam Crawford hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 7th. After outscoring the Tigers in Detroit 30-10 in two games, the Highlanders returned home just needing to win two of three to end this series. The Highlanders had won all four games at home in the previous series against Chicago. Detroit didn't even show any life as New York won Game 3 5-0 with Russ Ford pitching a 3-hit shutout. The Highlanders had 10 hits and also committed 3 errors. Harry Wolter went 3-for-4. Looking like a dead team walking, Detroit squeaked by New York 8-7 in 11 innings in Game 4 and avoided being swept out of The Gauntlet. The Highlanders scored 4 in the bottom of the 1st to take a 4-1 lead but the Tigers came back with 5 in the top of the 4th, including a grand slam home run by Ty Cobb, to take a 6-5 lead. Detroit out-hit New York 15-11 and won despite committing 6 errors. Cobb ended up 3-for-6 with 5 RBI. Birdie Cree and Bert Daniels each went 3-for-6 the Highlanders. The Highlanders nipped the Tigers 3-2 in Game 5 to close the books on this series. New York out-hit Detroit 11-5 in the game. Ray Fisher got the win. Harry Wolter went 3-for-4 including a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 3rd. Sam Crawford went 3-for-4 for the Tigers. Harry Wolter was named Series MVP.
