In short, you never will get ahold of the magnitude. It's relentless overwhelming, often even at the smallest levels.
Are you actually in Missouri? For simplicity and practicality, during league creation you can regionalize your league, e.g. Midwest. Based on what I've read of yours, I might suggest beginning with a league as small as 12 teams. Maybe 2 Leagues of 6 with a single division in each. Rules as you wish. The scope will be small enough for you to follow over time, maybe review weekly or play out your games, and regionally it might offer enough familiarity to aid immersion and/or imagination. FWIW
Guess I should add, that's enough world for now. If your life situation changes or time availability, familiarity with the game, etc... you can always add leagues later, bring in a British competitive league or expand yours to incorporate the east coast. Only limits will be your time, patience, and imagination. Initially, small 'worlds' are good worlds. There is every possibility you may experiment only to scrap this one a month down the road and create again. There are folks here who play little and create a lot. You may end up hearing from them as well.
