We had such a diverse group doing the original historical facegens there was a vast difference in quality of work. Coming down to ability of computers and availability of good pics.

There was also at 1st some question as to how to handle beards and such (i.e. Sparky Lyle). The original feeling (keeping in mind facegen was new) was to have guys younger and without beards because you could add beards and age them in game.

Many of the updates have much better faces but it's still hard to compile all the updates together. I think the roughest and most variable era is the late 70s and 80s because it's such a mix of different looks for players and a lot of players have been added as older versions when they became coaches.
