Do that combined with the other suggested changes while also setting trade difficulty as high as possible and I think you will find the game a bit more challenging.
I am like you in that I normally play my first run through and end up getting a super team. Then I start over with a much harder setup as many suggested and that league actually ends up being much more enjoyable even though I win fewer games.
