When I want to god-mode, I start 19th Century, to get a nice, large history.

But when playing? Oh man, managing those 19th century teams is the pits. No pitching changes, tons of errors, etc.

My last fictional in 16 started with modern setting, and I kinda liked it, actually. In the past I've done 1980 (liked), 1946 (liked) and 1901 (did not like), again, in terms of being involved as GM/Manager.

Given that I am thinking of dropping the multiple leagues conceit because I only ever pay attention to the one I'm playing in, I'm giving some thought to starting in 1946 (post-wars, so pretty much post-losing players and also having plausible cross-country MLB) with 2 sub-leagues and 2 divisions each, which I'll get a custom schedule to make each "division" a league of its own, with no inter-league. Probably start with 24 total teams (6 per "league") and expand over time.

That way, I can have the feel of a non-MLB clone but still have a universal Hall, universal stats, etc. (In my 16 league, I used association, and the best hitter jumped leagues, making it hard to see how well he had done in his career.)
