Fire The Manager Or The Superstar?
So, how do you guys handle a situation like this? I started a 2016 game with the Padres and somehow managed to get rid of all the dead weight on the team. Kemp, Ramirez, Upton, Shields, Cashner, etc.
In 2016 I also hired a new manager, Oliver Atteridge from Australia. I know it's bold and risky to hire a manager from down under with no MLB experience, but I liked what this guy had to offer.
We went 72-90 in 2016 with our depleted roster, and I went into 2017 with all the faith in the world in Oliver. Thank god I did, as we're vastly exceeding expectations and at the beginning of July we hold a 46-38 record, good for 3rd place in the new, 8 team NL West, a half game out of the final wildcard spot.
Here is where my dilemma lies. Wil Myers has turned into one of the best young players the game has to offer. 25 HR's by July 5th, while being on pace for 48 HR's and 129 RIbbies is pretty good.
I wanted to avoid arbitration and get him locked up to a long term deal to be the face of my franchise going forward, but he refuses to resign as long as my current manager is on board. What would you guys do? Stick with your guy? Or give into the selfish young superstar and fire your manager who's performing well above expectations?
