His time in AAA was due, no doubt, to him being in the final year of a contract paying him $24 million a year. In real life, perhaps the Dodgers could have traded him to another team, sending the second team perhaps $18 million or so to take over Jose's $24 million contract. My own theory for explaining Jose's rapid decline is that with his huge wealth he was able to buy from the Cuban government the major Cuban cigar businesses when they were privatized by Raul Castro in 2022 (Raul was in his 90s but still sharp as a tack!). Jose was distracted by running his new cigar operations and his hitting suffered.
