I've found it helpful to go looking for bench guys (especially those who play multiple positions) with much higher HR ratings against either LH or RH pitching.

For only $300,000 I signed a free agent with a 12 HR rating vs. LHP. (His HR rating against RHP is only 6.) I use him occasionally against LHP at 1B or LF because my regular 1B and LF are both lefty hitters, but mostly I use him as off the bench in late innings if I'm down a run or two. He's been great getting clutch HRs in those situations and he's a relative bargain.

If you look around you can often find platoon bargains out there.
