It was very common in pre WWII for stars to play in the minors and independent leagues. There were no multi-million dollar contracts and they were paid as pros not a lot of money compared to today, plus most had to work in the off season. Baseball was the only thing they knew and got paid for it, so if you were Tris Speaker and you wanted to play, someone would pay you because you were still somewhat good and you would be a draw.
