Sim speed is also heavily dependant on the number of leagues and teams in use. Unless if you have a really powerful computer, it's worth it to think about your universe. Do you care about the US independent leagues, or having the Cuban or Japanese leagues in the game? If not, it might be worth it to turn them off. Even something as simple as disabling finances or trading in those leagues could let them sim in the background faster if you still want them in the universe.
