regarding Alvarez, he was a prized Texas prospect at the time, and the White Sox were in the toilet. Larry Himes (Sox GM) engineered a deal with the Rangers in 1989, sending Harold Baines and Fred Manrique to Texas for Wilson Alvarez, Scotty Flethcer and a guy named Sammy Sosa. And, as we all know, Sosa was later traded to the Cubs for George Bell and cash. I still contend that the deal wasn't that bad for my Sox. Sure, in the long run it was, but they needed another stick in the middle of the order for a pennant run, and Sosa couldn't hit a beach ball at the time.
