Doing the math here: if every series was a three-gamer, the schedule would last 28 weeks. However, because each team plays six divisional four-game series (three each against two teams), the schedule actually ends up as 27 weeks, one longer than modern MLB as per the original post.
The only hitch is the doubleheaders combined with the lack of nondivisional four-game series. Ideally any 8H/7A matchup would contain a Sunday doubleheader as part of the 8H, but this may be hard to lay out. Under this proposal, each team would play either two doubleheaders at home or two doubleheaders away, but never one at home/one away.
I am not experienced with unbalanced schedules, I'll defer to Hip for the actual schedule creation.
