In 1977 scout Bob Fontaine Jr. rated a shortstop prospect 3 current/3 potential on defense (on a 1-to-7 scale). The prospect was defensive legend Ozzie Smith.

In 1986 scout Donald Labossiere summed up a prospect this way: "Does not have ML bat or power." It was Craig Biggio, who retired from the MLB with over three thousand hits and almost three hundred home runs, having won seven All-Star and five Silver Slugger awards.
