Two major things for me: Potential and Character.

I think the AI values some traits higher than others. There are a lot of times I can work a steal of a trade just because a guy has huge power potential. That's great, but can he field? Can he run? Is he a clubhouse cancer?

Hitters
Minimum Contact 10+, Eye 10+, Work Ethic average+, then look for any combination of fielding, power, high WE/Leadership, stealing

Pitchers
Starters must be 12+ in Stuff, Movement & Control, have decent WE/Leadership characteristics
Relievers as above, but control isn't important.

Guys develop, so I'd rather staff with quality coaches and skip the high-end talent, and develop my own stars. Investing in your organization pays long term dividends.
