It's up to you. I use reserve rosters, and play random debut historical, with my statistical output set to 1984, but that's just me. It takes a lot of fiddling at first because there are so many different settings to learn, but it's worth it to plod along at it because eventually you wind up tailoring the game the way you want it.
After all: "It's your game, play it your way." Your mission (should you choose to accept it) is to figure out and hone in on what "your way" of playing the game is because there are soooo many different ways to play it.
