It was an odd close non-race. The Hollywood Stars were able to build a 6 game lead by the end of June. The Seals were able to gain 1 1/2 over July, but no one really expected the 100 loss Seals to rebound into a pennant chase.
It was like a lightening strike: The Stars entered August leading 4 1/2 games. As September dawned, the Stars were under .500 and 4 games back themselves.
The Seals could not maintain the pace in September. The Stars and Seals were tied going into a 3 game set in San Francisco.
The first game turned on defensive miscues. With one out in the 9th, P Luis Miguel Couso (7-8 13, 1.85, 49) misplayed a ground ball. The next batter, CF Kristofer Kozina (.277, 2, 27), tripled. A Dean Elvers (.268, 9, 72) sac fly later, the game moved to extras.
The game quickly turned in the top of the 10th. With men on second and third and two out, Seals SS Jud Jibson (.223, 4, 45) couldn't handle a Spencer Afonin (.247, 1, 14) ground ball. The Stars one run lead became a three run lead as a rattled Edwin Paalman (5-8 5, 2.65, 31) walked three consecutive batters. Mariano Maddera (5-6 10, 1.96, 33) closed the door in the bottom of the 10th putting Hollywood up 1.
Iin Game 2, the Seals took a 2-0 lead on Kozina and Elvers' RBI ground outs. Up and Down lefty Freddie Lillig (6-6, 3.06, 38) rebounded from an 8 walk performance in his previous start to hold Hollywood to 1 run. The Division was tied again.
The final game of the series and season was a tight fought 1-0 win for Hollywood. 23 year old Raymond Streifel (6-8, 3.04, 26), making his second start after sitting out close to a month with arm issues. Streifel averaged 2.97 BB/9, but was able to pitch 4-hit, 0-walk baseball when it mattered most.
Colter Graese (20-16, 3.24, 120) might have been good enough to win most other days. Walks to Brice Hovermale (.266, 17, 69) and Josue Arciniega (.213, 5, 12) loaded the bases in the 2nd. Emile Hinn (.272, 2, 7) hit into a double play, but a run still scored. The Seals had a chance to tie in the 3rd: Jibson and Cornelio Dos Santos (.222, 6, 39) lead off with singles, and Graese bunted them over. Eaton Itson (.243, 1, 37) popped to short and Emilio Andrian (.222, 4, 43) grounded out to end the threat.
The Stars were the only division winner to repeat. Like the year before, they lost the ALCS to the eventual Cartwright-Doubleday Cup winner.
