YANKEES WIN WORLD SERIES!
For just the third time ever and the first since 1924 the New York Yankees are World Champions. The Yankees, who lost in 7 games to the New York Giants in the 1938 and 1939 Series knocked off those same Giants in 5 games this time around.
The Yankees won game five on the road at the Polo Grounds by a 9-5 scord as George Barr got his second win of the series and outfielder Joe Almy, filling in for the injured Elgie Vargas, had two hits and drove in 3 runs.
The Giants struck first, taking a 2-0 lead in the opening inning on an rbi single from John Wagoner and a wild pitch two batters later that allowed Wagoner to score. However the Yankees got 3 back in the top of the third off of surprise Giants starter Arturo Serna as Almy hit a two run triple and scored on a base hit from John Hanson.
The 36 year old Serna was 6-1 with a 1.99 era this season before blowing out his elbow in May. This was his first appearance since May 25th and he would not survive the 6th inning as the Yankees extended their lead to 7-2 before he was chased.
Yankee pitcher Barr was pulled in the 8th inning and allowed 5 earned runs on 10 hits before givine way to Manuel Rios and finally Sam Dignam who pitched the final inning. Yankee catcher Joe Martin tied a World Series record by being walked 4 times in the game.
Yankee second baseman and lead-off man Martin Robbins went 2-for-5 in the game and was named the series MVP after hitting .435 (10-23) with 3 rbi's and 3 runs scored.

LEAFS IN TOP SPOT THANKS TO BARIBEAU
Thanks to some outstanding goaltending from Marc-Andre Baribeau the Toronto Maple Leafs are unbeaten and sit atop the National Hockey League standings as the season completes it's second week. Unfortunately for Toronto, Baribeau suffered a shoulder injury in yesterday's 7-4 win over the Detroit Red Wings and is expected to be sidelined for the next ten days. The 35 year old Baribeau has been with the Leafs since 1927 and their number one goaltender since 1929, playing in 921 career NHL games and posting a lifetime save percentage of .893. This season through 7 games he had been almost unbeatable, stopping pucks at a .935 rate...tops in the league.
For the next week and a half the Leafs will have to rely on longtime backup Evan Tilley, who had a 3.48 GAA and an .884 save percentage in 17 games last year. Toronto does have plenty of offense - they lead the league in goals scored - and the first line of Chris Maxwell between Tyler Ellis and Ben Gilbart has combined for 26 points. Second line center Chris Bishop, who led the NHL in scoring last year, has had a slow start with just 3 goals and 4 points in the first 7 games but if he gets untracked the absence of Baribeau will not be as much of a concern.

SIX FIELD GOALS HELP BEARS PAST RAMS
Chicago Bears kicker Michael Parker made 6 field goals to lead the Chicago Bears to an upset victory over the previously unbeaten Los Angeles Rams. Neither club had great success moving the ball but the Rams did get a pair of touchdown passes from Curtis Cole to wideout William Pace. Unfortunately Cole was also picked off twice including one late in the third quarter that led to the Bears only touchdown on the day.
With the loss the Rams are now tied with the Green Bay Packers for top spot in the West Division at 4-1. The Packers capitalized on a 4th quarter mistake by rookie Detroit quarterback Jason Fischer as his pass was intercepted and returned 74 yards by Green Bay safety Robert Samson for the winning score in a 26-20 Green Bay win.
In other action Michael Huff threw for 319 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead Washington past Philadelphia 29-13. Robert Cole kicked 6 field goals in Baltimore's 25-14 win over San Francisco. William Hein ran for 99 yards and a touchdown to help Pittsburgh past New York 26-10 and St Louis got a 4th quarter 1 yard touchdown run from Robert Roberts to win a defensive battle over Cleveland 13-6.

ARMY BEATS NOTRE DAME
In what is always the biggest game of the season for the two independant powerhouses, Army kept it's National Title hopes alive with a 38-23 victory at home over Notre Dame. Army's two pronged attack of quarterback John Price and running back Donald Brady had a huge game as Price completed 22 of 31 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns while Brady carried the ball 27 times for 196 yards and scored three times. Brady also made 5 catches for 49 yards.
Meanwhile Notre Dame's great senior running back John Simmons did not score a touchdown but did rush for 117 yards while sophomore quarterback John Burnett passed for 311 yards and two scores.
At 5-0 the only stiff test remaining in Army's way for an undefeated season will be a date with #21 ranked Penn State in 5 weeks. The loss drops Notre Dame to 4-2 on the season as the Irish fell 44-16 at Penn State last week.
In other action Stanford held on to it's number one ranking with a 25-18 win over 6th ranked Oregon State thanks to a 3-touchdown 279 yard passing performance from quarterback Kenneth Rush.
The SEC continues to provide plenty of excitement with Georgia the only remaining unbeaten team in conference play. The Bulldogs beat Alabama 40-13 to hand the Tide their first loss of the year. In other action Florida dumped LSU 44-14 and Tennessee got a 24-16 win over Kentucky with James Roman in at quarterback to replace the injured Samuel Copeland.
