ANOTHER BLOWOUT WIN FOR YANKEES
The New York Yankees offense completely dominated the American League during the regular season so it really should be no surprise that the Yankees are doing the same to the National League champion New York Giants. For the second day in a row Yankee bats lit up Giant pitching to the tune of 10 runs as the American Leaguers went up 2 games to none in the World Series with a 10-6 victory at Yankee Stadium. After an off day tomorrow the series shifts to the Polo Grounds for the next 3 games (if necessary) beginning Saturday.
The outcome of this one was never in doubt as the Yankees sent 11 men to the plate in the first inning and scored 7 runs off of Giants starter John Petersen (18-8, 3.77). Petersen could not find the plate as he walked the bases loaded with 1 out and then issued a free pass to George Foskey to score the first Yankee run. Jim Post followed with an rbi single and then Petersen walked in two more runs before finally getting the second out when he fanned Yankee pitcher George Barr. Lead-off man Martin Robbins, who walked to start the game, then delivered a 2-run single and Joe Almy followed with an rbi single but the inning ended when Robbins was gunned down trying to advance to third. Petersen would settle down after that but the damage had been done.
The Giants first run off of George Barr (16-9, 4.00) came on a solo homerun from Celerino Ochoa (.303,5,73) in the 4th inning. Barr would go the distance and was not overly sharp, allowing 10 hits and 6 earned runs, but with the huge lead he was given he did not need to be sharp.
Yankee catcher Joe Martin(.276,9,62), whho had 2 hits and drove in a pair of runs was named the player of the game. The Giants, already ravaged by injuries, suffered another one as outfielder Ted Linton (.278,1,8) hurt his ankle and is day to day. Linton is filling in for the injured George Saunders in right field.
