Wills dominates Jeffries to win world title
On a nearly one-sided fight Harry Wills 23-2-1 (21) scored a UD10 win against, now former, champion James Jeffries 29-1-0 (28) that was attemping to make his first title defense.
The fighters split the first two rounds but then Willis easily outboxed and outpunched Jeffries until the eighth round. The ninth round was for Jeffries but on the last three stanzas Wills regained the total control of the fight. The scorecards were 118-110 (x2) and 117-111 for the new champion Wills.
Courtney destroys Fitzsimmons
On a huge display of power Peter Courtney 25-2-1 (21) scored a TKO1 victory against Bob Fitzsimmons 27-2-0 (24). Courtney dropped Fitz three times for the automatic TKO.
Dempsey climbs off the canvas to defeat Jeanette
Jack Dempsey 24-1-0 (23) scored a convincing UD10 win against Joe Jeanette 21-2-0 (17). Jeanette dropped Dempsey on the fourth round with a quick right and at this moment have an edge but from the fifth round to the end Dempsey's power dictated the rules and Jack earned a clear-cut decision win. Th e scorecards were 98-91, 97-93 and 97-92.
Langford stops Matthews
Sam Langford 26-2-0 (23) continued his Ko-streak with a KO4 win against Dick Matthews 24-4-0 (22). After being in control for the first three rounds, Langford dropped Matthews for the ten count with a sharp combination on the fourth one.
Corbett stops McCarty
Former title challenger James Corbett 23-1-0 (3) scored a coming from behind TKO9 win against Luther McCarty 28-1-3 (24). From the start of the fight McCarty appeared as the best man on the ring. After six McCarty had a 4-2 edge and he also dropped Corbett with a huge hook on the seventh round. Corbett barely beat the count getting up at nine and survived the round. On the following round McCarty semeed to be winded and Corbett outboxed him. Finally on the ninth round a left-right combination by Corbett put McCarty to sleep for the ten o****. At the time of the stoppage McCarty was leading by 77-74 (x2) and 78-73.
Fulton stops Ferguson
Fred Fulton 22-2-0 (21) scored a TKO5 win against John Ferguson 18-8-3 (7). Fulton dropped Ferguson on the first round and then he dominated most of the actions until giving a beating to Ferguson on the fifth round forcing the referee to stop the fight. At the time fo the stoppage Fulton led by 39-36 on the three scorecards.
Sullivan olbiterates Wells
John L. Sullivan 23-3-1 (21) scored a KO1 victory against an overmatched Bombadier Billy Wells 16-16-1 (13). Sullivan only needed less than two minutes and a murderer right hook to sent Wells to the deck for the ten count. Sullivan could be Willis rival on his first title defense, the other chance is former champion Peter Jackson.
Moran outpoints Sharkey
On a sort of upset Frank Moran 26-2-0 (18) scored a convincing UD10 win against former title challenger Tom Sharkey 27-1-1 (25). Moran dominated most of the actions but Sharkey had his moments specially on the ninth round. The scorecards were 98-93, 97-94 and 96-95 for Moran.
