Firings, Extensions, Trades and other tid-bits:
The initial pre-season predictions are in and from the looks of it it could end up being an exciting year. In the Southern Division the Sixteens and the Braves are predicted to be fighting it out both winning over 100 games... In the Northern the Colonials are the front runners, but the Clippers are too far behind... Over in the MarVa Conference it looks to be the same-ole-same-ole with the Surf Dawgs and the Cavaliers the early favorites, both winning over 100 games...
As far as the hitter and pitches predictions it looks like 2030 will be a hitters season. With 2 players predicted to hit over 50 HR's and 10 others over 40... There is only 1 pitches predicted to win 20 or more games and that is Norfolks Paul Brown. Brown won 21 last season and is predicted to win 20 more this year.

Its predicted we will only sell 13,900 season tickets this year. I'd like to see that be higher especially in our first season...
Spring Training:
Well the preseason predictions are in and we are rated the top expansion team and I have to say I am not liking our "predicted" record... The experts have us coming in with 60 wins an 102 losses (Cape May: 41-121, King George: 57-105, and Martinsburg: 56-106). Like I have said I really want to win 70 games this season, but it might be harder than first thought.
Just for comparision here are the final records of the 2017 expansion clubs:
Christiana: 57-105, Salisbury: 49-113, Seaford: 62-100, Virginia Beach: 55-107
The first game in Chadds Ford Cannons history was a 3-2 loss to the Blue Hens. The Cannons used 19 position players, collecing 9 hits with Tony Iman leading the way going 2-2 with a solo-HR. Enrique Maldonado also added a HR, going 1-1. Angel Rivera with 4 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 runs. He was followed by 9 other pitches, Alberto Hernandez and Juan Fernandez both wetn 2 hit-less innings.
Game 2 of the spring was the first 'W' in Cannons history. With Ernesto Calamacho going 4 innings allowing just 3 hits. He did walk 4 however. Matt Noble and Dan Kessler both went 2 innings allowing 1 hit each. Kessler and Noble are the Cannons #1 and #2 prospects.
We ended the mont going 1-3, which is ok, its spring and it feels good to get some games under our belt. We are young and inexperienced... that W was nice.
Offers:
February 1st
I reached out Dan Foley a catcher with semi-decent ratings and a better glove than what I currently have. He was looking for a big league offer, I offered a minor league deal... He wasn't happy with that and ended up signing with the Milford Clippers 8 days later.
February 8th
I reached out to what I thought was the top lefty left on the board and offered Michael Heathcote a minor-leage deal with a major-league option. The one reason I like Heathcote is he is a lefty and right now we dont have a viable lefty that is DBL ready.
February 28th
We reached out OF Francisco Reyes and offered him a minor league deal with a $1.2M option if he makes the club. He isn't nearly the player he once was and it might be a mistake, but having a HoF'er on the team and a veteran leader.
Sigings:
February 9th
Michael Heathcote signed a 1-year deal worth $1,078,000, assuming he is active and on the 40-man roster come opening day. Last year he pitched in 20 games with the Newark Millers going 2-1 5.70 with 3 saves. He is an average rated pitcher who has been deemed a work horse. I like that he is a lefty and he will be given a chance to make the big league roster.
GM Notes:
Last month we looked at the starters, this month we will take a quick look at the relievers. We have 12 in the bullpen for spring with only 6 coming with us when we head back to Chadds Ford. The roster will have 5 starters, 6 relievers and 14 posistion players...
The bullpen is probably our strongest feature, that and maybe team speed.
Battling for the slots:
Dan Kessler (12/15/11)
Ira Daniles (15/9/11)
*Juan Fernandez (12/12/11)
Leo Hampton (10/11/15)
*Alfonso Hernandez (12/11/12)
*Alberto Sanchez (12/9/15)
Matt Noble (11/11/13)
*Anthony Payne (11/12/11)
Michael Heathcote (10/10/11, L)
Long Shots:
*Jorge Quinones (8/9/15, L)
Aaron Henderson (11/9/8)
Arturo Contreras (10/11/11)
Quinones and Heathcote will battle it out of the lefty role. Quinones is out of options... Contreras is a long shot, but will have a shot as a starter and reliever... In all honesty I'd like to keep 9 of these guys on the roster, but I just don't see that happening...
I will have an issue figuring out which ones to keep and it is possible I go with 7 in the pen and only 13 position players. We have 5 that don't have options so I do have some flexibility, and I will use spring performance to judge these guys...
Leo Hampton is the current front runner for the closer role. Hampton doens't walk many people and 2 seasons ago did a solid job for me as the closer in Georgetown... My other idea is to throw Dan Kessler in the closer role, he may be the best qualified. He did save 34 games last season in AA and AAA.
The offense...
Right now there are 18 position players in spring training, and they are fighting for 13 or 14 slots. Two of them are already taken by the Catchers Jack Cavazos (7/10/12/8/7, S) and Jose Perez (7/9/9/8/9, S). So that leaves the other 16 players fighting for 11 slots.
My goal was to get guys who could run the bases, and of these 16 players 9 have a steal rating of 20 and 2 more have one of 19. I want to be able to make stuff happen on the base paths, since the long-ball isn't going to be something we can rely on.
The outfield should be interesting with only 1 player having 10 contact (out of 20), 1 with 9, 2 with 8 and 3 with 7.
(Contact / Gap / Power / Eye / Avoid K's)
Vance Burns (10/9/10/7/14)
Martin Adams (7/9/9/9/8)
Melvin van der Kamp (7/10/7/8/8)
Pablo Maldanado (9/9/1/3/13, S)
Felix Olivas (8/16/5/5/14, L)
Jamie Villarreal (8/10/4/6/10)
Terry Yates (7/1/7/7/7)
The Spring starters are Villareal, Adams and Burns. Olivas is set as the back-up CF and back-up 1B. He is also the only lefty of the bunch. Villareal is the only hitting decently during spring so far going 5-12 with 4 steals.
I will pay some more attention to these guys and make sure the sub's get more AB's. I am curious how players like Pablo will hit. I know he can run, but I need him on base too...
Felix Olivas is probably the only player in the bunch who is listed on the opening day roster, right now. He really is a sure thing not only is he one of the better hitters of the OF's he is able to play 1B, 2B, 3B, SS and CF above average. Me and manager Guiherme Guardio will make good use out of that.
If we broke today Villareal would be in left, Burns in right and Olivas in CF...
