Trujillo hot streak fires A's to top of AL West
By Sam Oldstory, deja vu correspondent
First baseman Luis Trujillo is making American League ballparks look very small right now. The hunky slugger is at the peak of his game, and has helped propel the A's into their predictably familiar position in first place in the American League West division. The 25-year-old is seeing it like a football right now, and has smoked 6 home runs in his last 7 games. He also went 5-5 in last week's 5-1 win over Baltimore.
Two of those homers came in last night's stroll to a 7-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Cellular Field. Trujillo started the rout in his first at-bat in the top of the 1st inning, smashing a 3-run home run into the second tier. For good measure he added a solo shot in the 3rd inning, a hit which caused great mirth when it was embarrassingly dropped in the crowd by none other than sacked ESPN pundit John Krukadoodledoo, the man who so famously, confidently and generously predicted that Paulie Beane would be a hopeless GM for the Oakland organisation. With Nathan Hamilton on fire, throwing 7.2 innings and giving up just two hits and one walk, the game was effectively over before the White Sox even stepped out to bat.
So far this season, Trujillo is making a strong push for a first call-up to the all-star game, by wellying a .355 on-base percentage, and an impressive .944 OPS. In 57 games played, he has 17 home runs and 48 RBIs. After yesterday's blowout win, the A's now stand at 35-23, and have a slender one game advantage over early divisional pacesetters the Houston Astros. Proving that last year's World Series win was no fluke, the Detroit Tigers have the best record in baseball, at 39-19.
