He was probably the guy leaking stories to the local media everywhere that he played. Sucking up to your future voters is always a solid plan, and maybe your real best-of-the-best guys had at least 1-2 media members who were just irrationally biased against them (Pedro Martinez/George King) who took it out on them in the HOF voting.
