Vargas signs for Washington
By Ron Washington-Nationals, DC correspondent
Former Oakland superstar, free agent starting pitcher Lucio Vargas, has signed for Washington, it was announced last night. They will pay him a bank manager-upsetting $26m per year for three years.
A's fans were apparently shocked at the "news" that Vargas would not be returning to the organisation, although quite why that was when everyone has known perfectly well for months that he would be joining another team, is a mystery. GM Paulie Beane said, "Lucio was only here for a couple of years but led us to a World Series title and will always be a legend in Oakland. I wish him all the best in his time at the bottom of the National League. How irritatingly predictable that he should sign for a team with a protected first round draft pick, meaning we'll probably get little or no compensation to speak of."
