Cleveland Spiders (46-59 .438 26.5 GB in 7th place)

Al Rice, Det. (23-7.6) (R 29-12 2.16 7.5-1.1-5.2 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Lou Townley, Clev. (26-3.4) (R 25-16 2.47 7.5-1.1-4.3)

Won - 7 to 2

3 times Townley tried to make a throw to 2nd to force a runner and 3 times he threw the ball away.

Rice becomes the 1st 30 game winner in the major leagues!

Rice allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run.

Townley gave us 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.

We did not make an error and Cleveland made 7.

2B Ed Aldrich (24-6.8) had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. CF Fred Negus (24-6.7) had 2 hits, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. 1B Sam Cowan (32-5.1) did not do much, but managed to grab himself a pair of RBIs. C Cliff Robinson (30-6.1) had 3 hits with a triple, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI.

Liberty League:
Pittsburgh (9) at Indianapolis (0): Whitey Mathews (25-4.1) (22-19) over Sal DeVaux (34-3.5) (16-24). Mathews ends Pittsburgh's losing streak by pitching with no days of rest. He allowed 2 hits, no walks and struck out 6. RF Joe Coffey (32-5.2) had 3 hits with his 3rd home run of the year, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Grand National Association:
Kansas City (3) at Providence (4): Tom Ashton (24-5.2) (26-17) over Al McClaughry (24-5.6) (14-16). Ashton allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. McClaughry allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 3.

St. Louis (5) at Washington (6): Pop Yurkovich (36-5.6) (16-22) over Ed Copeland (22-6.0) (4-11). Neither pitcher was excellent in the pitcher's box, but both were swinging in the batter's box. Yurkovich had 2 hits and a walk, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Copeland had 3 hits with a walk and scored a run.

Milwaukee (4) at Omaha (5): Lee Sprague (28-3.5) (25-8) over Kid Henze (24-5.2) (5-8). Sprague allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out 4. 3B Dave Henderson (25-4.1 had 2 hits with a triple, stole a base and scored 3 runs. RF Abe Cupp (27-4.7) led the GNA in RBIs last season, but has only played in 13 games this year due to injury. He pulled a muscle and will miss another 2 weeks.

Elsewhere:
Down in the Central Interstate League (B), Dave Steffen (23-5.4) of the Dubuque Shamrocks, in only his 5th professional start, tossed a no-hitter against the 1st place Danville Browns, winning 3 to 0. He walked 1 batter and struck out 1. He is now 2-2 with a 1.38 ERA for the 7th place Shamrocks.
