Manager Mickey Baker (45-7.5) has his Spiders in town to begin a 4 game series today. We took 2 of 3 in Cleveland a month ago. They are 3rd in the League in scoring with 4.8 runs per game (Detroit is #5 with 4.7). They are 7th in runs allowed with 5.5 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.3).

Since Dave Frazier (28-5.7) is still a bit banged up and everyone else is tuckered out, I took C Joe Garner (29-5.5) off the roster for just today and called up P Ed Price (24-5.7) to pitch.

Cleveland Spiders (21-26 .447 10 GB tied for 5th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (31-16 .660 1st place)

Lou Townley, Clev. (26-3.4) (R 14-6 2.33 7.2-1.1-4.3 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Ed Price, Det. (24-5.7) (R 8-2 0.89 6.1-0.6-3.6 in A Ball)

Of course, the Spiders are not a bad team when Townley is in the pitcher's box. The 1st time we faced our old teammate we lost 3 to 2.

Lost - 8 to 7

RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game, but ex-Wolverine 2B Tom Nelson (21-6.6) hit a 2-out double in the top of the 9th to give the Spiders the lead and Townley sat us down in order in the bottom half of the inning. Nelson had 3 hits.

Price allowed 13 hits, 3 walks and struck out 1. He is now on a train back to Syracuse.

Townley gave us 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI.

We made 6 errors and Cleveland made 3.

CF Ren Dunbar (24-6.8) hit a double and scored a run. 1B Sam Cowan (32-5.1) had 2 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. RF Ben Smith had 2 hits with his 5th home run of the year, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs.

Liberty League:
Pittsburgh (1) at Indianapolis (11): Sal DeVaux (33-3.5) (8-11) over Whitey Mathews (25-4.1) (10-8). DeVaux allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. C Fred Smith (33-6.8) hit a home run and drew a walk and scored 3 runs. SS Jake Steitz (29-4.7) had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

New York (6) at Louisville (3): Miah Turner (27-5.3) (10-8) over William McLeod (29-5.6) (11-9). Turner allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 2. 1B John Hilliard (28-7.2) hit his 4th home run of the season.

Cincinnati (8) at Boston (6): John Stevens (31-8.2) (8-12) over William Little (27-6.0) (12-8). LF Willie Kirby (26-2.1), in only his 2nd game of the season due to injuries, had 3 hits and 2 RBIs. For the Shamrocks, LF Charlie Warner (34-9.2) had 3 hits with his 10th home run of the year and 2 RBIs.

Grand National Association:
St. Louis (6) at Kansas City (5): Jimmy Richards (25-0.9) (8-6) over Lew Burnett (27-4.5) (10-8). Ex-Wolverine 1B Jack Warren (36-7.2) had 3 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI.
