Their was a lot of player movement at the Red Stockings during May. Firstly they lost Left Fielder Ted Scheffler mid month to a strained oblique that will see him sidelined for 6 weeks. This was partially off set by the return from injury of Left Fielder Ed Beecher at the end of the month.
The team was also involved in 2 trades during the month.
The first trade saw the team send 24 year old Short Stop John Rainey, 24 year old minor league Right Fielder Ed Silch and 24 year old minor league Left Fielder Bill Smith to the New York Giants in exchange for 31 year old Pitcher John Murphy.
The second trade saw 23 year old Right Fielder Joe Dowie depart for the Washington Nationals in exchange for 32 year old Centre Fielder Pete Hotaling.
Right Fielder Hugh Duffy led the team forward during May as they built a strong month. He managed to collect 37 hits from 103 at bats during 27 games. He scored 20 runs with 21 RBI's for an average of .359.
