You might want to try the fictional mode to start easy and learn the interface and aspects of the game.

As for modern day, stick with the league you know. Likely the NHL. Under the manager tab, I suggest that you tweak some of the settings of what you want to control. If you want to learn quickly, have the AI manage the roster or lineups. Pick and choose what you want to control. I suggest you control contracts, draft to start. Leave the AHL team to your assistant as one team might be enough to start. Turn off the exit autoplay when there is an injury if you simulating. Then after your more comfortable, enable roster management to you and so on. But you could always just jump right in full.

I wouldn't say it's a massive learning curve to begin playing, but could take more time for you to compete. Pick a strong team that's a playoff contender like the leafs to start haha or Chicago, New York. Edmonton's a good choice too...they just need a goalie most likely.

You should also play with commish mode enabled to start. Use your first game as a tester and learning game.
