A's stock up on young arms in amateur draft
By Rookie Betts, draft correspondent
Oakland GM Paulie Beane selected five young relief arms in yesterday's draft, all of whom the club's scouts project to 4* or better. Oakland had the 22nd overall pick as a result of other clubs losing their earlier pick in the round through free agent signings, plus 2 picks in the supplementary round.
They selected relievers Jose Duran (21/L/2*), Jose Martinez (21/R/2.5*), Brandon MacPherson (20/L/0.5*), Gonzalo Avila (18/L/0.5*) and Ramon Sandoval (21/R/1*). Beane said that he was looking for bullpen arms from the draft anyway, but ended up with this selection simply by choosing the best player available when each pick came round. "By the time it got to our first pick, all the batters remaining were a pile of rubbish. Complete dross, seriously. The draft pools on this game can be dreadful". Duran and Martinez may be challenging for spots on the major league roster before the season is out.
