Boston Red Caps (58-50 .537 11.5 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (71-40 .640 1st Place)

Dave Wolf, Bos. (25-4.7) (R 20-8 2.92 9.5-1.7-3.0 H-BB-K/9) vs. Al Rice, Det. (22-7.6) (R 12-10 3.08 9.4-1.5-3.5).

Lost - 11 to 5

The game was tied at 3 going into the 9th inning and then all heck broke loose.... Rice retired the 1st 2 batters of the 9th and then walked the bases loaded and then 2B Al Shaffer (27-5.6) made an error and then general chaos reigned supreme, capped by a bases-loaded home run by rookie CF Tom Thornton (24-6.4). It was Thornton's 2nd home run of the season in only his 6th start.

Rice allowed 11 hits, 5 walks (4 in the 9th inning) and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run.

Wolf gave us 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. At bat, he had 2 hits and scored a run.

We made 7 errors and Boston made 2.

1B Jocko Cole (26-5.1) hit an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the 8th that I thought was a big hit at the time as it tied the game up at 3 apiece. He now has 4 home runs on the season. He also made 2 of our errors. 3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) did absolutely nothing on offense and made 2 of our errors. SS Tom Nelson (21-6.6) hit a double and also made 2 of our errors. 2B Al Shaffer (27-5.6) hit a double and scored a run and made the other error. LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) had 2 hits with a double, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. CF Tom Duncan (22-6.6) hit a double and had an RBI.

For the Red Caps, RF Dan Abrams (29-5.1) hit a triple and his 6th home run of the season, drew a walk, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Liberty League:
Indianapolis (0) at New York (10): Miah Turner (26-5.3) (27-14) over Sal DeVaux (33-3.5) (17-21). Turner allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 7. Rookie CF Fred James (23-5.3) hit 2 double and a triple, drew a walk, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Pittsburgh (5) at Cincinnati (9): John Stevens (30-8.2) (27-20) over Whitey Mathews (24-4.1) (21-25). Stevens allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 3. For the Puddlers, rookie 2B Ed Hewitt (24-5.6) hit his 2nd home run of the year.

Grand National Association:
Omaha (10) at Baltimore (4): Lee Sprague (27-3.5) (26-29) over Ed Price (23-5.7) (2-6). Sprague allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. Omaha made 10 errors.

Kansas City (10) at Milwaukee (7): Al McClaughry (23-5.6) (35-19) over Wild Bill Perrell (23-7.3) (3-3). Hodges allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. He is 5-2 in his last 9 starts.

St. Louis (1) at Chicago (17): Pat Seguin (23-4.4) (34-25) over Ted Ryther (33-4.3) (28-22). Seguin finally had a good outing: he allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. SS Bob Robertson (25-4.1) hit a double and a triple, drew a walk, stole a base, scored 4 runs and had 2 RBIs. C George Sandefur (31-5.8) had 4 hits with 2 triples, scored 5 runs and had 2 RBIs. Rookie 1B Tom Jackson (23-5.8) had a hit and a walk, scored a run and had 4 RBIs.
