New York Gothams (35-45 .438 18.5 GB in 7th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (54-27 .667 1st place)

Tom McDowell, N.Y. (23-8.0) (R 5-6 5.54 12.2-2.7-2.3 H-BB-K/9) vs. Al Rice, Det. (22-7.6) (R 8-4 2.97 9.6-1.4-3.2).

Won - 5 to 4

Rice followed his typical pattern of late: he gave up 3 runs in the 1st, 1 in the 3rd and then shut them down. We did not get our 1st hit until 2 outs were recorded in the 6th, when LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) hit his 4th home run of the season over the short right field fence. We managed to tie the game up before going into the 9th inning. In the top of the 9th, LHP Dave Frazier (27-5.7) came in to pitch because they had 2 left-handed batters leading off and I had pinch-hit for Rice. The 1st batter doubled and the 2nd singled, but CF Fred Bianco (28-6.9) threw out the runner at home. Frazier managed to retire the next 2 batters and get out of the inning. Playing in his 2nd game of his major league career, C Jack Henderson (27-4.5) led off the bottom of the 9th and hit one over the right field fence to give us the win. He now has 2 home runs in 2 career games played.

In 8 innings, Rice allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.

McDowell gave us 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. At bat, he had 2 hits.

We made 3 errors and New York made 4.

LF Al Lewis had 2 hits with a home run and scored 2 runs. 2B Al Shaffer (27-5.6) had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI.

For the Gothams, 1B John Hilliard (27-7.2) had 3 hits with a double and his League-leading 14th home run of the season, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. It was his 6th (!!) home run against us this year. He and LF Charlie Warner (33-9.2) of Boston are the 2 biggest thorns in my side. 2B Bill Baker (25-3.6) had 3 hits with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs.

This was our 8th win in a row and 13th out of the last 14 games. To pull this one out of the hat proves that we are playing under a special blessing of the baseball gods. 5 of the wins in our 8 game streak have been by a single run and 2 of them were sudden death wins.

Liberty League:
Cleveland (17) at Cincinnati (3): Ed Pedersen (25-5.1) (15-24) over John Stevens (30-8.2) (18-17). I believe Cleveland set the all-time record with 5 home runs in this game. Pedersen allowed 3 hits, 4 walks and struck out 1. Manager/C Deacon Dubin (30-8.8) had 4 hits with his 3rd home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. CF Jake Howard (28-4.6) hit a double and his 4th home run of the year and scored 4 times. Rookie 1B Kid Stryffeler (25-9.2) had 4 hits with a double and a home run and 3 RBIs. RF John Bradbury (26-7.6) hit a home run. 2B Jesse Flanders (27-5.4) hit his 7th of the year. Former Hurler Trophy winner Stevens is 2-8 in his last 10 starts. The Reds losing streak reaches 7 games.

Pittsburgh (8) at Louisville (3): Whitey Mathews (24-4.1) (16-15) over William McLeod (28-5.6) (19-13). Mathews allowed 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. C Wilson Wendling (26-4.1) hit his 6th home run of the season. For the Bourbons, C Andy Runnels (30-7.8) hit a home run.

Indianapolis (3) at Boston (4): Dave Wolf (24-4.7) (12-6) over Jimmy Euler (26-5.5) (10-10). Wolf allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. Euler allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. LF Charlie Warner (33-9.2) hit his 11th home run of the year. C Hub West (33-6.7) hit his 4th.

Grand National Association:
Brooklyn (3) at Baltimore (4): Pop Yurkovich (35-6.1) (15-22) over Al Green (24-3.8) (18-20). Yurkovich allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. Green allowed 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4.

Providence (8) at Omaha (9): Lee Sprague (27-3.5) (17-23) over Ed Hodges (27-3.2) (9-24). Providence scored 7 times in the top of the 9th to just miss a miracle. Sprague did not allow an earned run. For the Grays, 1B Charlie Gregor (28-5.2) hit his 3rd home run of the year.

Milwaukee (5) at St. Louis (7): Fred Barrow (35-4.7) (18-17) over Zachary Buchanan (26-4.0) (21-15).

Kansas City (2) at Chicago (6): Pat Seguin (23-4.4) (26-16) over Al McClaughry (23-5.6) (26-15). Chicago scored 5 runs in the 7th with the help of 3 errors. Seguin allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. McClaughry allowed 6 hits, 4 walks and struck out 3.
