RF Joe Kraus (30-7.9) is ready to play, so I shipped CF Willie Kirby (25-2.1) off to Syracuse. You know, whenever I contemplate whether I should sign a player or not, I figure I can get along with anyone if they can play. But then, when I actually have to spend time around some of these less-than-admirable characters, I wonder what the heck was I thinking? I don't want these bums on my team! So, I sent CF Tom Panozzo (22-2.0) to Syracuse, too and have brought CF Fred Bianco (28-6.9) back.
A lot of the other players were complaining about Panozzo and Kirby and Panozzo was complaining about everybody else. I think he's gonna be great hitter. Heck! He already is a great hitter! But he won't be hitting here.
Both of those bums will be traded this winter. And if you can keep a secret, P Lou Townley (25-3.4) and C Evan Eckberg (31-3.5) are in their last seasons as Wolverines, too. That is, providing I am back myself.
Louisville Bourbons (24-21 .533 4.5 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (29-17 .630 1st place)
Count Childs, Lou. (31-3.1) (R 8-8 4.66 9.6-4.3-3.4 H-BB-K/9) vs. Ed Bush, Det. (27-5.3) (R 11-7 3.70 8.2-2.6-2.7)
Childs shut us out the last time we faced him.
Lost - 13 to 7
Bush was just awful and has been awful for 6 starts in a row. Besides the booty he gave up to the Bourbons listed below, he threw 4 wild pitches and beaned 3 batters. You can add Bush's name to the list of those who will be on the trading block this winter.
In 8 innings, Bush allowed 11 runs on 11 hits and 2 walks and struck out 2.
Ed Seelow (27-4.5) pitched the 9th inning and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits, though he did strike out 2. He's on the midnight train to Georgia (though he will transfer to a train heading towards Syracuse before he makes it to the Peach State).
Childs gave us 10 hits, 5 walks and struck out 1. At bat, he had 2 hits, a walk, got beaned and scored a run.
We made 3 errors and Louisville made 2.
CF Al Lewis (21-9.1) had 2 hits with a triple and a walk, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. He is not well-suited to center, but to get all the bats I want in the lineup, he has to play there. Next year, he will be the everyday left fielder and LF Ben Smith (28-6.7) will be finding a new home. 3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) had 2 hits and an RBI. SS Tom Nelson (20-6.6) had 2 hits and a walk, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. C Jimmy Babcock (30-6.9) had 3 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.
For the Bourbons, RF John Rodgers (35-4.4) had 2 hits with his 3rd home run of the year, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. He is now 5 hits shy of Sam Cowan (31-5.1) for the all-time lead. C Andy Runnels (30-7.8), another of their ex-Wolverines, had 2 hits with a triple, got hit by a pitch, scored twice and had 3 RBIs. Our old shortstop, 2B Sam Swanger (34-4.8) had 2 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.
Liberty League:
Indianapolis (2) at Cleveland (3): Henry Rawls (33-4.3) (8-10) over Jimmy Euler (26-5.5) (2-4). Rawls allowed 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had an RBI double. Euler allowed 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. CF Jake Howard (28-4.6) had 4 hits, stole 2 bases and had an RBI.
Pittsburgh (11) at New York (6): Whitey Mathews (24-4.1) (8-7) over Tom McDowell (23-8.0) (4-2). 2B Dan White (27-5.1) had 4 hits with a triple and a home run, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 6 RBIs.
Boston (3) at Cincinnati (4): Charlie Branham (27-4.2) (13-9) over William Little (26-6.0) (8-10). Branham allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. Little allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 5. RF Fleet Wilcox (30-4.9) for the Reds and CF Pat Stafford (26-5.4) of the Red Caps each hit their 10th home run of the season to stay tied for the League lead.
Grand National Association:
Providence (6) at Baltimore (7) in 11 innings: Ed Price (23-5.7) (1-2) in relief of Pop Yurkovich (35-5.6) over Bill Henson (30-6.5) (4-11). C Fred Clapp (28-4.0) singled home the winning run.
Brooklyn (7) at Omaha (8): Tom Lee (29-6.0) (9-5) over Ren French (26-4.9) (11-8). For the Gladiators, c Jim Granier (32-5.7) hit his 3rd home run of the season.
St. Louis (12) at Kansas City (6): Ted Ryther (33-4.3) (12-11) over Dan Butler (30-4.7) (0-2). CF James McClellan (29-4.7) hit a triple, drew a walk, stole 2 bases and had 4 RBIs.
