Trade! Cleveland sent LF Joe Coffey (30-5.2), the career leader in nearly every offensive statistic for the Spiders, to Pittsburgh for three minor league prospects: P Kid Mathewson (20-6.4), P Archie Boucher (24-6.1) and RF William Kasteler (24-5.3). Coffey had been a member of the Spiders for as long as they had been in existence. He and the team were both rookies in 1879, when the team was in Utica and was called the Pent Ups. Mathewson is the real prospect of the bunch, topping most people's lists of ace pitching prospects. He is from New York City and was named the top amateur pitcher in the country by the NAABBP (National Association of Amateur Base Ball Players) in 1885.
