We head on the road for the first time this season to play a 3 game series in Cleveland against manager/C Deacon Dubin (30-8.8) and his Spiders. We beat them 2 of 3 in Detroit a week ago in a series where every game featured a double digit score. After a week of play, Cleveland is 4th in the League in scoring runs with 6.7 per game (Detroit is 2nd with 7.0). They are 7th in runs allowed with 7.5 per game (Detroit is #1 with 4.7). They have reconfigured their League Park from last season with an eye to making it less cruel to their struggling pitchers. It is very tough to hit one out to left, but somewhat easier to right, though by no means easy.
3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) is ready to play, so he'll be in the lineup. IF Russell Gardner (33-6.4) was sent to Syracuse to make room.
Detroit Wolverines (4-2 .667 tied for 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Cleveland Spiders (2-4 .333 2 GB in 7th place)
Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 1-1 4.50 13.5-1.0-4.0 H-BB-K/9) vs. Henry Rawls, Clev. (33-4.3) (L 1-1 3.00 12.0-0.0-3.0)
Won - 5 to 2
Duncan stole home!
Townley allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI.
Rawls gave us 15 hits, no walks and struck out 3.
We made 2 errors and Cleveland made 4.
SS Tom Nelson (20-6.6), the surprise of the season so far, had 4 hits and an RBI. He now has 13 hits in our first 7 games. Truthfully, I expected him to be a couple of seasons away from being able to contribute and still expect him to come back to earth any day now. I can't believe Kansas City gave him to me for next to nothing! 3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8), in his season debut, had 3 hits and scored a run. RF Joe Kraus (30-7.9) hit a double and had an RBI, but struck out 3 times and is batting .150 on the season. CF Tom Duncan (22-6.6) had 2 hits, stole 2 bases (including home!) and scored a run. I cannot remember the last time I saw a fellow steal home! C Jimmy Babcock (30-6.9) had 2 hits and scored a run.
For Cleveland, SS Jesse Flanders (27-5.4) hit his 2nd home run of the year.
