We begin a 3 game series with manger Harry Lashley (44-5.5) and his Keystones today. We are 11-1 against them so far this season and we swept then in 3 games in Philadelphia the last time we me, three weeks ago. They are currently 8th and last in runs scored with 4.8 per game (Detroit is 3rd with 5.3). They are 7th in runs allowed with 6.1 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.9).
I sent SS Hubbard Hooker (28-5.3) and 3B Fred Parrish (27-5.7) to Syracuse and recalled RF Jackie Porter (32-6.3), SS Dave Krampe (28-5.5) and 3B Russel Gardner (32-6.4)
Philadelphia Keystones (41-61 .402 27 GB in 7th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (68-34 .667 1st place)
Gene Rankins, Phil. (29-5.4) (R 10-10 3.14 9.4-4.3-2.9 H-BB-K/9) vs. Sal DeVaux, Det. (32-3.5) (R 5-1 1.71 6.9-2.8-4.9)
Won - 5 to 4
DeVaux shut them out until the 9th inning. He allowed 6 hits (4 in the 9th), 1 walk and struck out 5.
Rankins gave us 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out no one. At bat, he had a hit.
We made 4 errors and Philadelphia made 3. It is the 5th straight game we have made more errors than the other guys.
1B Sam Cowan (30-5.1) hit a 2-run home run, his 3rd of the season. 2B Jocko Cole (24-6.1) had 2 hits with a double. C Joe Kotlyar (30-6.2), in his season debut, hit a 2-run triple.
Liberty League:
Cleveland (6) at Cincinnati (8): Charlie Branham (26-4.2) (15-6) over Bill Henrichs (27-7.4) (9-8). Branham has won 7 decisions in a row, though he has not pitched very well his last 2 outings. Part of the reason he won this one is that as a hitter he had 3 hits with 2 triples, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. LF Fleet Wilcox (29-4.9) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored a run and had an RBI. Cincinnati has won 8 in a row.
Grand National Association:
Providence (3) at Pittsburgh (1): Ed Wison (25-7.3) (30-18) over Tom Lilly (26-6.4) (24-22). The Grays scored twice in the top of the 9th to break a 1-1 tie on a double, an error and a wild pitch. Wison allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. At bat, he hit a double. He has won 9 of his last 10 starts. Lilly allowed 4 hits, 4 walks and struck out 8. He has lost 4 in a row, not one of them a bad start.
Milwaukee (9) at Baltimore (1): Wiley Steel (24-5.6) (6-9) over Tom Wilmarth (26-5.4) (19-24). Steel allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit, 2 walks and scored 3 runs. C Jarvis Patten (30-7.3) had 3 hits with a double and 5 RBIs. CF Asa Holtz (26-6.7) had 4 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.
Brooklyn (4) at Omaha (5): Tom Lee (28-6.0) (28-14) over William David (23-3.6) (0-4). Lee allowed 8 hits 4 walks and struck out 2. David allowed 3 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. Brooklyn made 6 errors. Omaha retakes 1st place.
