Friday the 13th! I am not superstitious, but I am leery of superstitions.
The Chicago Colts added former MVP, OF Candy Simpson (27-6.8), to their roster this morning. He has not played since he injured his shoulder in the 2nd game of the season. The Colts have made it to 1st place without him and I do not think they are going to be worse with him. He elected not to play any games in A Ball to get back in shape.
Detroit Wolverines (55-27 .671 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Cleveland Spiders (36-43 .456 17.5 GB in 5th place)
Ed Bush, Det. (26-5.3) (R 24-8 2.30 6.6-2.5-5.6 H-BB-K/9) vs. Willis Kornfield, Clev. (33-6.0) (R 2-7 4.58 10.5-3.2-3.8)
Won - 6 to 0
I told you there was something in those superstitions. Just this time the bad luck landed on Cleveland.
Bush allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 8. At bat, he had 2 hits and scored 2 runs.
Kornfield gave us 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3.
We did not make an error and Cleveland made 7.
1B Sam Cowan (30-5.1) had 2 hits, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. LF Ben Smith (27-6.7) had 2 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI.
Liberty League:
Philadelphia (1) at Cincinnati (8): Lou Ellard (28-6.3) (8-6) in relief of Charlie Branham (26-4.2) over Fred Barrow (34-4.7) (12-19). Branham had to leave after 3 innings with a pulled muscle, but should be fine in a week or so and probably can pitch with the injury. In 6 shutout innings of relief, Ellard allowed 1 hit, no walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit and 2 RBIs. Rookie SS Rosie Hutchinson (29-5.9) had 3 hits, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had an RBI.
Rochester (5) at New York (8): Miah Turner (25-5.3) (17-19) over Bill Henson (29-6.5) (11-23). Turner allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 8. 1B John Hilliard (26-7.2) had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.
Indianapolis (9) at Boston (8): Levi Giddens (34-4.8) (9-19) over Joe Peters (30-4.9) (16-12). Indianapolis pounded out 19 hits off Peters. LF Jimmy Sanders (29-6.8) had 4 hits, stole a base and had 3 RBIs. SS Bob Moran (34-4.5) hit 2 doubles, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs.
Grand National Association:
Baltimore (3) at Providence (9): Ed Wison (25-7.3) (22-17) over Sammy Berry (26-5.5) (1-2). Wison allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. Rookie CF Al Young (22-4.8) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. RF John Froom (38-6.2), on his birthday, had 3 hits with a double and his 5th home run of the year, scored twice and had 2 RBIs.
Omaha (3) at Chicago (4) in 10 innings: Pony Stanley (23-6.2) (27-17) over Lee Sprague (26-3.5) (14-13). SS Bob Robertson (23-4.1) led off the bottom of the 10th with a triple and later scored on a wild pitch to win the game. He had 5 hits with 2 triples and stole 2 bases, but only scored the one run. In 10 innings, Stanley allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. He has now won 8 decisions in a row and is 19-4 in his last 24 starts. Sprague allowed 9 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5.
