Today, we learned of two significant deaths that happened overnight, both from massive heart attacks.
Manager Chief McEniry (48-5.4) of the Chattanooga Lookouts has died. His team is currently in last place, but the speculation that it was suicide seems entirely unfounded. He had been employed continuously as a manager in the minor leagues since 1881. Back in the old National Association he was the starting catcher for Baltimore, who missed being the champions of the first season in 1871 by one game. John Burton (47-3.6) has been hired to finish the season as the manager of the Lookouts. He managed in the Liberty League last season, guiding the expansion Rochester Jingoes to a 19-57 record and last place in their final 76 games.
Also, Frank Phillips (67-6.7) died at his home in Milwaukee. He was the owner of the Troy Haymakers from 1879 to 1884. After the 1884 season he sold the team to Charlie Townsend (56-6.2), who ran them out of business before he had owned the team for a full calendar year. Phillips also famously fired Reddy Ricker (39-6.0), the skipper of the Haymakers, with only a few weeks left in the 1879 season. Ricker had led the Haymakers to the first three Liberty League Championships and was seeking his fourth title when Phillips abruptly dismissed him. The team had a record of 42-20 at the time of the firing. Ace pitcher, John Bendickson, since deceased, took over the management of the team and led them to a 14-9 record down the stretch and their fourth Championship in a row. It would be their final one, however.
Grand National Association:
Omaha (1) at Pittsburgh (5): Whitey Mathews (23-4.1) (14-13) over Lee Sprague (26-3.5) (6-4). Mathews allowed 6 hits, 4 walks and struck out 7. Sprague allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 1. SS Jim Ware (32-5.6) had 2 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. C Wiley Fobes (35-2.5) hit a double and a triple, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.
Milwaukee (6) at Providence (7): Tom Blomberg (28-4.7) (13-12) over Dan Burton (31-4.9) (14-12). Blomberg allowed 11 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI. Burton allowed 11 hits, 4 walks and struck out 2. RF John Froom (37-6.2) had 3 hits with a double and scored a run. C Jim Richardson (33-5.1) had 2 hits and a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.
Brooklyn (12) at Kansas City (13): Lew Burnett (25-4.5) (6-5) in relief of Dan Butler (29-4.7) over John Ritch (31-7.8) (11-5). Kansas City scored 6 times in the 1st inning. Brooklyn scored 5 times in the top of the 9th to tie the game, but the Cowboys scored in the bottom half to win. C Gene Stone (29-5.4) hit a 2-out single to win the game. He had 4 hits on the day with a walk and scored twice. For Brooklyn, RF Tom Campbell (28-3.6) had 3 hits with a double and a walk, scored 4 runs and had 2 RBIs.
Baltimore (3) at Chicago (9): Pony Stanley (23-6.2) (14-13) over Tom Wilmarth (26-5.4) (8-18). Stanley allowed 4 hits, 5 walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. He has won 6 in a row and Chicago has won 12 straight. Rookie RF Jimmy Cast (21-3.6) had 2 hits and a walk, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Chicago has effected this winning streak despite the fact that 4 of their starting players are injured and cannot play.
