In Clemens' last two years, he skipped the first two months of each season. First for the Astros, then for the Yanks. In each occasion, he had three minor-league tune-up starts before making MLB appearances. I would think, no matter what kind of throwing program a free agent has, it would *never* happen that he would sign and then pitch the next day. Not a biggie, but it was odd.
