The players will be assigned contracts automatically based on performance and ratings on the first day of the offseason. You can cut a player and only be responsible for a small portion (default is 15%) of the salary based on the settings on the "financials" tab. When you reach the proper year (1976?), free agency will start automatically if you have checked "import adjusted financial settings each year" (default is on) on the historical tab.
