Consistency, consistency, consistency. I cannot say that enough. You'll always want high-rated players, but medium to even low rated players can get the job done. For example: A big power 1B who has had a .240 average for a few years but hits 30-40 HRs is a consistent HR hitter (in my books, it's all based on preference). I always like hitters who are quick, and can hit above .280 with more than 5 HRs. If a player can keep the same production and ratings, they are a good player in my books.
