Injuries:
LF Bob Short, Fractured thumb, 2 weeks
SP Joaquin Hernandez, Partially torn labrum, 3-4 months
One thing we don't have a lot of depth in is starting pitching. Well sort of, I mean we do have two starters in the bullpen, but with the way they have been pitching I feel like I can't make that move... at least not yet... so when we go the news that our rookie stud Joaquin Hernandez is going to be out 4 months with a partially torn laburm I got nervous... After looking over the obvious 4:
(stuff/movement/control/prospect ranks)
Lazzaro Tadiotto, 12/11/11, #27 DBL, #4 NFK
Angel Rivera, 11/15/9, not rated
Michael Meagher, 12/13/11, not rated
Alberto Ramos, 12/11/11, #31 DBL, #5 NFK
I decided to go with Boyd Martin (11/12/12, #33 DBL, #6 NFK) who was being used as the closer in Yokohama our AAA club thi season. He is probably not quite ready for this slot, but I am just going with my gut. He is another lefty, so I am not sure if that is a good thing or not, but I am willing to give him 2 starts before I jump to one of the other kids. Martin was our 2 round pick, 33rd overall, pick in the 2023 draft. He will get his first start this week.
Other/Roster News:
Edgardo Perdnard (AAA): 22-56 / .393-3-17, 5 2B, 2 3B / 2B rating: 1
We signed an ex-farm hand Jeffrey Miller to a minor league deal. Miller was part of the Cav's organization from 2013-2023. He has no big league experience, and has been signed for depth. Stuff: 10, Movement: 10, Control: 15
GM Notes:
I need to figure out what is going on with Sergio Galvez. He doesn't seem to be stealing bases this season, in fact he only had 2 steals, and has been gunned down 6 times. That is not the Sergio Galvez I saw last season.
When Short returns from the DL it looks like I will have a tough choice to make. I will have to find a space in the lineup for both Trevor Parker and Leonard Lawson. Parker has proven that he deserves more AB's hitting .264-4-16, while Lawson continues to hit .253-5-14 as well. Both these guys have quality bats and keeping them happy will be a must.
Pedro Torres is having a solid start, hitting .261-0-4 with 2 triples. I am not sure what to do when I have to move him down. I like his bat. I could get a little crazy and make a move. Trade Baez (.286-2-9) or Gomez (.367-3-3), but I am not sure I want to do that just yet. Based on the projected arbitration numbers for 2027 one of those two guys will have to be dealt.
Boyd Martin had an impressive debut going 7 innings, and only allowing 6 hits. Granted it was against one of the worse teams in the DBL, but impressive none-the-less. My biggest concern is the 0 K's. Then again the day before against my other lefty, the Ports only struck out 3 times.
This is our second week to go 7-0 and I am truly shocked. I am excited by it as I thought this was going to be a rough season. I am not saying the season is over, but this team is tough. I really didn't think we were going to be this good this year, but the way this pitching staff is throwing makes a huge difference. The Senators will make a run at some point, and getting as far as head as possible as early as we can will make a big difference.
