OOTP handles rehab assignments backwards as compared to real life. In the real world, players on rehab assignment are still on the DL; in OOTP, the player comes off the DL and then can be sent on a rehab assignment prior to be reactivated. The game does it this way due to limitations within the game's coding.

In terms of historical accuracy, rehab assignments did not exist prior to 1981. (There was no DL at all prior to 1941, other than the NL experimenting with a DL rule for the 1915-16 seasons.)
