Detroit Wolverines (59-34 .634 1 GB in 2nd place in the Liberty League) at
Cincinnati Reds (50-43 .538 10 GB in 3rd place)

Ed Bush, Det. (25-5.3) (R 9-8 2.29 6.9-3.5-5.4 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Ellard, Cin. (27-6.3) (R 16-18 3.12 9.2-2.4-2.8)

Won - 5 to 4 in 15 innings

Let me tell you that extra innings in this little ballpark are very tense when you know that at any moment anyone can hit one over the fence and end the game. But no one ever did hit one out today. He were down 4 to 1, but caught a break when Ellard got hurt and had to leave the game in the 8th. He had been frustrating us all day. Tom Blomberg (27-4.7) was the new pitcher and we scored 3 in the 9th to tie the game up.

Bush went 8 innings, allowed 4 runs, 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had 2 hits with a triple and scored a run.

William McLeod (26-5.6) came in and was dealing bullets from the get-go. He gave up a hit in the bottom of the 9th, but struck out the side. He pitched 7 shutout innings, allowed 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7. At bat, he hit a double to lead off the top of the 15th and scored the go-ahead run.

Ellard went 7.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 5 hits, no walks and strcuk out 3. At bat, he hit 2 doubles and scored a run.

We ended up with 16 hits and made no errors. In 15 innings, that is impressive! Cincinnati made 4.

RF Joe Kraus (28-7.9) had 3 hits, stole 2 bases, and had 2 RBIs. Our big guns, 2B Jocko Cole (23-6.1) and LF Ben Smith (26-6.7) went 2 for 14 with 4 strikeouts. 1B Spider Thomas (29-4.6) had 4 hits with a double and 2 triples, drew a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. His triple in the top of the 145th, put us in the lead. Why didn't I think to make him a first baseman from the get-go? SS Sam Swanger (33-4.8) had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI.

For the Reds, 3B Frank Young was 2 for 2 with a double, stole a base and scored a run, but had to leave after dislocating his shoulder sliding into second with the steal. Our catcher never made a throw on the play. Young will miss the rest of the season and that is a shame. He has been in this league since 1876 and was having the best season of his career. Ellard had a pulled hamstring and will likely miss the rest of the games.

Liberty League:
Rochester (6) at Troy (4): Bill McClean (39-6.0) (9-40) over Harry Lamb (30-6.4) (22-17). McClean allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. Lamb allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. 1B Pete Hinde (30-7.9) had 3 hits, stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs.

Cleveland (7) at Washington (6): Jim Ludwig (25-4.6) (11-16) over Lou Townley (23-3.4) (23-26). Ludwig allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. At bat, he had a hit. Townley allowed 10 hits, 4 walks and struck out 6. Cleveland scored twice in the top of the 9th to take the lead. RF Joe Coffey (29-5.2) tripled home the tying run and scored the go-ahead run on an error.

New York (5) at Boston (4) in 12 innings: Jack Roberts (33-6.1) (1-0) over Freddy Wood (29-6.3) (11-12) in relief of Joe Peters (29-4.9). Roberts, who led the Liberty League in innings each of the past 4 seasons, had to sit most of this one out after tearing a muscle in his back in Spring Training. He made his season debut today with no time in A Ball to get back in shape. In 11.1 innings, he allowed 11 hits, 6 walks and struck out no one. That's what you call a "gutsy" performance. After he walked a batter in the bottom of the 12th, John Allen (27-6.4) came on to get the final 2 outs. In 9 innings, Peters allowed 8 hits, 6 walks and struck out 6. Manager/LF Hi Lynch broke a bone in his elbow and will miss the rest of the season. His replacement, rookie Jake Herrmann (26-3.6) had 3 hits with a double and a triple and scored a run. He is 9 for 18 (.500) since being called up from A Ball. Detroit and Boston are now dead even in the pennant race with 18 games to play. The two teams will meet in Detroit for the final series of the year.

Grand National Association:
Kansas City (3) at Brooklyn (2): Al McClaughry (21-5.6) (20-9) over Ren French (24-4.9) (4-10). McClaughry allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 7. At bat he had a hit. He has won 7 in a row. French allowed 11 hits, no walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit. The Cowboys scored a run in each of the first 3 innings and the Gladiators scored twice in the 5th. SS Fred Umbaugh (24-5.4) had 3 hits, stole a base and had an RBI. LF Lou Baggett (23-4.2) had 2 hits with his 2nd home run of the year, stole a base and scored twice.

Providence (6) at Baltimore (11): Tom Wilmarth (25-5.4) (11-23) over Sam Paul (30-5.4) (15-19). CF Nat Lusk (25-6.4) had 4 hits, stole 4 bases and scored 3 runs. LF John Cray (28-7.0) had 2 hits with his 2nd home run of the year, scored twice and had 3 RBIs. For the Grays, RF John Froom (37-6.2) had 4 hits and an RBI. Providence has now lost 11 in a row. 333 people bought a ticket to see their beloved last-place O's. Our A Ball team in Syracuse drew 642.

Chicago (2) at Omaha (7): Lee Sprague (25-3.5) (24-9) over Pony Stanley (22-6.2) (14-19). Sprague allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. He has won 10 in a row and Omaha has won 13 straight and still not an inch of ground gained. SS Rube Ford (34-5.1) had 2 hits with a double, took a beaning, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Pittsburgh (6) at Milwaukee (0): Tom Adams (31-6.0) (32-12) over Tom Washam (33-6.1) (20-15). Adams allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. He won his 6th in a row and Pittsburgh has won 10 straight. This was his 4th shutout of the year. SS Jim Ware (31-5.6) had 2 hits with a triple and scored 2 runs.
