Some variation of this happens IRL every year. Melky Cabrera wanted $18M+ over 4 years from the Blue Jays this winter and signed for $13M, $14M, $15M with the White Sox. Just because he was able to fleece Chicago doesn't mean he was worth the money.

FWIW in the leagues I play no significant FA ever go unsigned and many drop their demands dramatically after Jan 1. Is there some setting off in your league?
