1895 season

Last October, the heavyweights of the different leagues met each other in the capital to discuss a possible way to organize and set baseball in a decent way in Belgium to avoid future conflicts. The argumentation went not as expected and teams of Eeklo and Ghent, carried by their chaimen, decided to secede from the league of Antwerp to form a new one, based in their own region of East Flanders to gain a much more significant impact on the local market. The idea preached would be to encourage each region to form its own baseball league in view to send their best formations to dispute a national challenge in the very end of the season. An extended Beker van de Kampionen, in sum. The finals would take up on Brussels in a knockout tournament during the first week of May, on neutral fields.
This is the solution which was passed by a majority, even if Jean Ducoupeau (C.S. Liège), Godschalk Mertens (Brugge Sterren) and Pierre-André de Nîmes (Verviers Sport) have expressed their desire of a single national league where the top teams would compete during an all season long without any regional barrages judged counterproductive in the idea of raising the level of their players.
As for the name of this new competition that will take place in the capital, it is French: the Coupe des Clubs Champions, which keep the meaning of its Flemish older brother. It is for this cup that the best clubs of Antwerp, East Flanders, Liège and West Flanders will battle this season. With the hope that the provinces of Brabant, Hainaut, Limburg, Luxemburg and Namur will join them in the future years. Another meeting is already set at the end of the season, to seek possible evolutions in that way.
The league created by Eeklo and Ghent is the New Flemish League, in which clubs from Lochristi and Evergem will tussle to obtain their ticket for the finals. The Evergem's team is named Boudewijn Club, after Boudewijn (or Baldwin in English) I, also known as the Iron Arm, who was the first margravate of Flanders in 860. A strong Flemish identity at a time where flamingantism is not quite well perceived. Especially with the last year's problem.
But let's see the results.

The Zeilers accomplished a sensational run, which can easily remind the 1893 season where they only lost five games.
Zeebrugge and Evergem qualified by escaping to their opponents in the very last games. The Blacks of Ghent thought that this year would the good year, but he newcomers of the Boudewijn Club stole their precious ticket.
For the Francophone serie, it was another closed year who saw the victory of Liège for the second time.

The Zeilers for the attack, the Boudewijners for the defense. A duel that could be interesting but the draw decided it in another way.

ANTWERPEN ZEILERS vs ZEEBRUGGE ZON - 5th May 1895
CLUB SPORTIF LIÉGEOIS vs EVERGEM BOUDEWIJN CLUB - 6th May 1895

Here are the posters plastered for these five and six of May.
The first game already looked like a final itself and attracted a lot of curious caught by the rumors of a beautiful joust, while the second game received far less attention and was even considered as a game of outsiders. But how to prove them wrong?

One says that an Antwerpen fan try to eat his cap and choke on it to stop the massacre he was attending to.
Five to two. Did this really happened? Darn yes. How? Only God knows how.
Even the West Flemish were not expecting that. But they did it. Put an end like this on a season like this... It's a waste. A big fat waste that is going to be hard to swallow. The Zeilers have not witnessed the final, they left the same day towards Antwerp.

Despite the lack of enthusiasm, this game was frankly stunning. In the press, some even spoke of a scolding duel between wallingant and flamingant. Duel which would have continued in the stands between fans.

We have two winners. So here comes the great final of the first edition of the Cup of the Champions Clubs.

Truly, some agitation was formed following the spectacular match won by Evergem, but the East Flemish were here in their first season and didn't achieved to compete against a well trained West Flemish selection.
They were smashed, but with some honors. The honors to have, before that, eliminated their Liégeois enemies.

BELGIAN CHAMPIONS:

ANTWERPEN ZEILERS - 7 (last time in 1894)
ZEEBRUGGE ZON - 2 (last time in 1895)
BRUGGE STERREN - 1 (last time in 1888)
