Detroit Wolverines (34-18 .654 0 GB in 2nd place)

We begin a 4 game series against manager John Burton (46-3.6) and his Jingoes today. We won 3 of 4 against them when we last met in the middle of May. They come in on a 3 game winning streak. They are currently last in runs scored with 3.7 per game (Detroit is 3rd with 4.9). They are 7th in runs allowed with 5.3 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 4.0).

Won - 5 to 4 in 10 innings

With the scored tied at 4, 2B Doc Coe (28-4.7) led off the top of the 9th for the Jingoes with a triple, but Rochester did not score. In the top of the 10th, SS Bill Rush (36-3.7) led off with a single, stole second and ended up at 3rd when the catcher threw the ball away. So the go ahead run was 90 feet away with no outs, but McLeod struck out 3 in a row to hold them in check. 1B Harley Becker (31-6.8) then led off the bottom of the 10th by knocking one over the left field fence to win the game.

In 10 innings, McLeod allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6.

McClean allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.

Each team made 5 errors.

2B Jocko Cole (23-6.1) had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. LF Ben Smith (26-6.7) had 2 hits, a walk, stole 2 bases and had an RBI. SS Sam Swanger (32-4.8) had 2 hits and stole 2 bases.

For Rochester, CF Gus Ivey (29-6.3) had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI.

Liberty League:
Troy (3) at Cleveland (5): Willis Kornfield (32-6.0) (15-11) over Harry Lamb (30-6.4) (12-9). Kornfield allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7. At bat, he had a hit. Lamb allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit and a walk and scored a run. LF Joe Coffey (29-5.2) had 2 hits with a triple, a walk, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. C Deacon Dubin (28-8.8) had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

New York (2) at Washington (1): Count Childs (29-3.1) (10-16) over Lou Townley (23-3.4) (14-10). Childs allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. Townley allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. For Washington, RF Ted Steeves (23-4.2) hit 2 doubles and had an RBI.

Boston (2) at Cincinnati (3) in 12 innings: Lou Ellard (27-6.3) (10-9) over Joe Peters (29-4.9) (21-8). In 12 innings, Ellard allowed 11 hits, 7 walks and struck out no one. His defense helped him out by only making 2 errors and turning 3 double-plays. Peters allowed 8 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. His defense made 6 errors, but did turn a pair of twin killings. In the bottom of the 12th, P Ellard walked with 1 out and went to 2nd on an error. He then lit out for 3rd with the intention of stealing a base and the catcher threw the ball into the outfield and he scored the winning run. Ellard is no blazer, but he has above average speed and that is his 2nd steal of the season. He stole 8 last year in A Ball. He was a pretty fair first baseman back in the day. With the Red Caps loss and our win, the Wolverines are back in first place!
