NL Season Wrap-up

On August 1st, the Cubs and Cardinals were tied for first with the surging Reds just one game behind. However, the Cubs went 21-6 in August including a streak that saw them win 17 of their final 18 games in the month. The fulcrum for their outburst was centerfielder Cy Williams, who broke out of his early season funk and hit .327 with an incredible 19 home runs in the month!

Meanwhile, St. Louis went 12-15 in August and fell out of contention. The Reds went 16-7 to remain in the race, but four of their seven losses were to the Cubs. Cincy then lost 7 of their first 11 games in September and were eliminated shortly thereafter.

This marked the first pennant won by the Cubs in five years - the last time a pennant was not captured by the Giants. In fact, the Cubs and Giants have accounted for all of the last 8 NL pennants, with each team winning four. Chicago's pitching staff was good enough for the team to win 96 games thanks to an incredible offense, but the pitching staff was still ranked just 6th in the NL, which is a concern going into the World Series. The bullpen was the best part of the staff, ranking 3rd in the league. The Cubs offense hit the most home runs in the MLHR and they outscored the nearest NL opponent by 48 runs.
